Folk music of the khmer ethnic group in An Giang province
Audio sample
An Giang is a province in the Southwest of Vietnam. This is the first place of the Mekong delta receiving Mekong river’s flow. An Giang is 3,424 square kilometers in area. Its border line is about 97 kilometers long and borders on Cambodia.
The total population of the province is over 2.12 million people including ethnic groups such as the Kinh, Hoa, Châm and Khmer. In An Giang, the Khmer people chiefly live in Tri Tôn and Tịnh Biên districts. The Khmer’s culture and art is imbued with national identity and plenteously expressed through folk dances and music.
Within the scope of the project “Supporting Vietnamese culture for sustainable development” sponsored by SIDA (Sweden), the Vietnamese Institute for Musicology would like to introduce some special folk music items of the Khmer people that were collected in the fieldwork in An Giang in 2007.
