Folk music of the ethnic groups in phú Yên province

Audio sample

Phú Yên is the coastal province in the Central South of Vietnam. The North of Phú Yên borders Bình Định province; the South is contiguous to Khánh Hòa province; the West borders Đắk Lak and Gia Lai; and the East is contiguous to the Eastern sea.

At present, thirty ethnic groups are living in Phú Yên province, among of whom are Kinh, Chăm, Ba na, Êđê, and Hoa people occupying the most population here and having long-standing residence. Many ethnic groups create the diversified cultural appearance and the specific cultural character for Phú Yên. Apart from relics and the tower architecture of Chàm people, many traditional festivals of Kinh people are organized yearly such as the Ô Loan-lagoon festival, the Đầm-dam festival, the cẩu Ngư festival, the Nguyên Tiêu festival at Nhạn mountain, etc. (Cầu Ngư means praying for the good fish crop and Nguyên Tiêu means the nigh of the fifteenth of the first lunar month). Furthermore, there are the buffalo-stabbing, Bỏ ma ceremony, good crop-praying festivals of the ethnic minorities in the mountain of Phú Yên and many special folk musical activities and dances.

Within the framework of the program "Supporting Vietnamese Culture for the Sustainable Development' sponsored by SIDA (Sweden), the Vietnamese Institute for Musicology would like to introduce some selected folk musical items of Chăm H’roi, Ba na, Kinh people implemented in the fieldwork in 2008 in Phú Yên province.
