Audio sample
HÀ GIANG is a mountainous frontier province in the north pole of Vietnam. Its North and West border People’s Republic of China, Lào Cai, and Yên Bái; its East is contiguous to Cao Bang province; its South borders Tuyên Quang province. Twenty ethnic groups such as Hmông, Dao, Pà Then, Tày, Nùng, Giáy, Bố Y, Thái, La Chí, Pu Péo, Cờ Lao, etc. are living in Hà Giang at present. Each group has their own cultural heritages, which create the special characteristic of Hà Giang culture.
The Vietnamese Institute for Musicology would like to introduce some selected musical items of Hmong, Dao, and Giày groups collected in the fieldwork in 2009 in Quản Bạ district, Hà Giang province. This is one of the activities belonging to the project “Supporting Vietnamese culture for sustainable development” sponsored by SIDA (Sweden).
