Audio sample
SƠN LA, a Northwestern mountainous province in Vietnam, has the area of 14,125 square kilometers. In this province there are many hills and mountains, valleys, thick forests, MỘC Châu and Nà sản plateaus. Sơn La, including a city and ten districts, is the home of twelve ethnic minorities, i.e. Thái, Kinh, Kháng, Dao, Hmông, Khơ mú, Hán, Tày, Lào, Mường, La ha, and Xinh mun, among which Thái makes up 54% of the population province wide. Each ethnic group there has their own and unique characteristics in usages and customs, clothes, religion, musical instruments, music, and dance. Those create a rich and special cultural tradition for this land.
In February 2009, the Vietnamese Institute for Musicology realized a sub-project entitled Collect, preserve, promote, and develop the music and performing arts of ethnic groups in Sơn La province, which belongs to the project “Support Vietnamese culture for sustainable development, 2005-2009” sponsored by SIDA (Sweden).
