Audio sample
LÀO CAI province situates in the North Vietnam's border. It is known with the Fan Si Pan summit (3,143 meters high) in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range. Fan Si Pan is dubbed “the roof of Vietnam ’. In addition to high mountains and the waved terraced fields, there are many places of scenic beauty and the famous cultural historical monuments such as Thác Bạc, cầu Mây, Hàm Rồng, the ancient stone-lands, Tả Phin cavern. Hoàng Liên national park, etc. Lào Cai province is the home of ethnic groups that belongs to many different language groups such as Mông-Dao, Tày-Thái, Việt-Mường, Ka đai, Hán, Tạng-miến. Ethnic groups there present the similar characteristics but still maintain their special aspects, which creates the richness and diversity for the traditional art and culture treasure of this land.
HÒA BÌNH, a mountainous province in Northern Vietnam, is the cradle of the age-old ‘‘Hòa Bình culture". Hòa Bình covers an area of 4,662.500 square kilometers and is the home of six ethnic groups, namely Kinh, Mường, Thái, Tày, Dao, and Hmông, among which Mường people make up 63.4% of the province's total population. Hòa Bình presents a very unique and special folk music art of ethnic groups including the strong, moving, and supernatural-powered rhythms of the gong sets of Mường ethnic group; Xòe dances, the love-exchange singing of Thái people; the performance form in folk belief rituals of Mường, Dao people, etc.
In the framework of the project "Supporting Vietnamese Culture for Sustainable Development, 2005-2009" sponsored by SI DA (Sweden), in March 2006, the Vietnamese Institute for Musicology realized the sub-project "Collect, preserve, promote, and develop the music and performing art values of Vietnamese ethnic groups" in Lào Cai province. We have recorded many folk musical art forms of Giáy, Dao đỏ, and Hmong ethnic group. They have the most population in this province and focus to live in villages. We would like to introduce in this CD some special numbers of three above ethnic groups.
