Folk music of Ethnic groups in Lạng Sơn and Vĩnh Phúc province

Audio sample

LẠNG SƠN is a mountainous province in Northern Vietnam. The ethnic groups there include Tày, Nùng, Dao, Kinh, Hoa, Sán Chay, Hmông, Thái, Mường, Êđê, Sán Dìu, among which Tày and Nùng are in the majority. Each ethnic group there presents its own rich and alluring folk music with much special specificities. In 2006, the project Supporting Vietnamese culture for sustainable development, 2005- 2009 sponsored by SI DA (Sweden) was realized in Lạng Sơn province. It focused on the collection of folk music and dance art of Nùng, Tày, and Sán Chay ethnic groups. We would like to introduce in this CD some folk music and dance numbers of three above ethnic groups.

VĨNH PHÚC situates in the Northwest gateway to Hanoi capital, the natural area is around 1,372 kilometre squares, and the total population is 1.2 million people. Vĩnh Phúc province is in the midland region of Northern delta. This geographical characteristic creates many special cultures there. Besides the Kinh people, there are other ethnic groups in Vĩnh Phúc province such as Sán Dìu, Cao Lan (Sán Chay), Tày, Dao, etc. Despite making up 3.17 % of total population, the ethnic groups there live in a quite extensive half-mountain half-plain area along the southwest side of Tam Đảo mountain ranges. They have had a stable life in this land basing on the half-wet rice and half-dry rice cultivation in combination with the farm production growth, the cattle breeding and hunting. The folk culture and art life of ethnic groups there is rich and presents many specific characteristics.

Within the scope of the project “Supporting Vietnamese Culture for the sustainable development” sponsored by SI DA (Sweden), the Vietnamese Institute for Musicology would like to introduce some selected folk music items implemented in the fieldwork in 2006 in Lạng Sơn and Vĩnh Phúc. The Vietnamese Institute for Musicology focused on collecting the artistic capital of folk music and dance of the four ethnic groups Tay, Nung and San Chay, San Diu and Cao Lan.
